Dr. Shonu Tsering was born in May 1986 in Chhule, Rasuwa District, Nepal, into a Buddhist family practicing the Nyingma tradition.

At the age of eight, he developed a strong interest in medicine and went to Dongak Ling Monastery, led by his uncle. There he spent nearly seven years studying medicine, esoteric rituals, prayers, meditation, philosophy, monastic discipline, and the foundations of Dharma practice.

In 2011, he entered the Sowa Rigpa Institute to study traditional Sowa Rigpa medicine alongside Buddhist studies, with particular emphasis on the teachings of the Yuthok lineage.

During his studies, he mastered traditional diagnostic methods, medicine preparation, therapeutic techniques, and the Buddhist philosophy of healing. In 2016, he was awarded the Kachupa degree and later continued his advanced studies, receiving the Menrampa degree in 2020.

In addition to his academic training, Dr. Shonu devoted significant attention to researching the root causes of disease and methods of restoring health through meditation and breathing therapy.

He practices two transmission lineages of the Nyingma tradition: Chokgyur Lingpa and Dudjom Tersar.

In the Chokgyur Lingpa lineage, his teacher is His Holiness Phakchok Rinpoche.

In the Dudjom Tersar lineage, his teacher Urgyen Kalsang transmitted to him methods and explanations of esoteric rituals and terma practices for working with karmic illnesses.

Dr. Shonu also received valuable medical teachings and empowerments within the Kagyu tradition from His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and His Eminence Nubpa Konchok Tenzin Rinpoche. From the latter, he inherited the contemplative tradition of working with and treating illness.

Dr. Shonu has completed the Yuthok Nyingthig Ngöndro practice three times and has also completed a three-month Yuthok Nyingthig Tsa Sum retreat. These practices became an important foundation for both his spiritual life and his medical work.

For more than 15 years, he has successfully treated chronic digestive disorders, gout, blood-related illnesses, and other long-term conditions. In addition to working with patients, he also prepares natural medicines according to authentic Sowa Rigpa methods.

Dr. Shonu’s life path has been dedicated to study and practice, and he is pleased to share the knowledge he has accumulated through seminars and lectures.
